    This is a permanent full time position working 35 hours per week.
Reporting to the Manager of Planning Policy, this role supports the development, implementation and monitoring of Halton Region’s strategic priorities and planning policy objectives in the official plan and related documents.
Preferred Background:
The successful candidate will possess a degree in Planning or related field combined with a minimum of three (3) years progressively responsible experience in land use planning, preferably at the local, regional or provincial level, including giving evidence at the Ontario Municipal Board/Local Planning Appeal Tribunal. Knowledge of the Planning Act, Provincial Policy Statement, Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, and other Provincial land use initiatives, are essential. The ability to work in a fast-paced environment, communicate effectively and meet deadlines is required along with strong problem solving, collaboration and political acuity. A thorough understanding of current municipal and provincial issues related to land use planning and growth management would be an asset. Membership or eligible for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. GIS and advanced MS Office skills are an asset.
Working Conditions:
Evening and weekend work may be required on occasion. Travel will be required between locations within Halton Region and incumbent must supply their own transportation. The successful candidate will be made an offer of employment on condition that the Regional Municipality of Halton receives a valid Ontario driver’s license.
  • Participates in the development of Official Plan policies and implementation strategies based on research and public input in Halton, as well as in the review of local municipal Official Plan Amendments, secondary plans, and other local planning initiatives.
  • Supports Senior Planners and the Manager of Planning Policy in working directly with Local Municipalities, consultants and land owners to implement strategies in accordance with the Regional Official Plan, the Planning Act, Places to Grow Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Prepares technical papers, guidelines and reports related land use planning initiatives and enabling tools, as well as Official Plan policies and amendments, for Council consideration.
  • Responds to public inquiries regarding land use and growth management initiatives as well as Halton Region’s Official Plan policies.
  • Assists to maintain the Regional Official Plan implementation monitoring system.
  • Co-ordinates, monitors and resolves conflicts and problems on Regional planning matters affecting Regional departments, outside agencies, Local Municipalities, the Province, private industries and the public.
  • Assists with public consultation and public meetings.
  • Prepares and gives evidence before judicial board hearings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
