Assistant Superintendent of Operations (Parks)

Reporting to the Superintendent of Operations (Parks), the Assistant Superintendent of Operations (Parks) is responsible for overseeing the daily operation and supervision of Parks division including:
  • supervising, planning and delivering the day-to-day operation;
  • providing input to the development of long-term resource needs and strategic plans;
  • recruitment, training, development and labour relations;
  • supervision, scheduling and oversight of work performed by staff and contractors;
  • ensure that the required staff, equipment and materials are available;
  • Preparation, evaluation and administration of various tenders/quotations;
  • Ensure compliance, including training and documentation, with technical regulations and legislation, i.e. Electrical Safety Authority, Canadian Standards Association Playground Standards, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Ministry of the Environment requirements, International Society of Arboriculture best practices, etc.;
  • developing, implementing and training of new and existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and ensuring compliance and documentation as applicable, adhering to the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • provide input to the capital and operating budget process;
  • effectively respond to general requests, concerns and complaints from residents, the public, user groups, senior staff, and other departments; and,
  • other related duties as required.
 
As the successful applicant, you must possess:
  • a diploma/degree in a related Parks discipline (Landscape Design/Construction, Horticulture, Turf/Grounds Management, Parks Management, Urban Forestry, etc.);
  • a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a parks maintenance/construction environment, with a minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience in parks maintenance (including winter control of outdoor facilities and parks infrastructure);
  • a valid Ontario Landscape and Industrial Vegetation Exterminator Licenses (preferred);
  • a recognized Playground Inspector Certification (preferred);
  • strong management, leadership, interpersonal and team building skills, preferably in a unionized environment;
  • strong reasoning, analytical, research and decision-making skills;
  • excellent project management skills, including organizational and prioritization;
  • a demonstrated understanding of municipal government and related legislations;
  • considerable fiscal and budget management skills;
  • a demonstrated intermediate level of knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel);
  • excellent communication skills in order to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, consultants and the general public;
  • the ability to demonstrate tact, diplomacy and work with a broad range of partners;
  • the ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines, including organizing and prioritizing workloads;
  • a valid driver’s license (Class “G”) maintained in good standing.
 
Salary: Based on skills, ability and qualifications.
 
Hours: Monday to Friday – 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
