General Accountabilities
Reporting to the Supervisor of Central Services the Skilled Labourer Construction is responsible for performing numerous aspects of construction and maintenance on GRCA facilities. The position also assists in the implementation and coordination of assigned projects for the Central Services department and operates small equipment in support of construction projects.
Specific Accountabilities
  • Provide skilled labour on GRCA construction and maintenance projects.
  • Operate small equipment in support of maintenance and construction projects.
  • Assist the Supervisor with site supervision of contractors working on GRCA projects.
  • Coordinate assigned staff and services on GRCA projects, provide work direction and ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Provide administrative and technical support to the Supervisor including, but not limited to, inspection reports, daily record keeping, and the procurement and inventory of materials, tools, equipment, and services.
  • Perform proper maintenance and minor repairs on assigned tools and equipment.
  • Participate in and/or undertake special projects as assigned.
  • Assist with the operation of the sign shop including processing sign orders, ordering materials, layout, assembly and installation of signs for Conservation Areas, Nature Centres and other properties as required.
Technical Accountabilities
  • Minimum two year College diploma or a certificate of qualification or apprenticeship in a construction related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant work experience.
  • Proficient knowledge and experience in a range of construction and maintenance related skills including, but not limited to, underground servicing (water, sanitary), septic systems, sewage pumping stations, grading/drainage, and general carpentry. Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems is desirable. Knowledge of small drinking water systems would be beneficial.
  • Restricted ‘A’ license with the ability to operate trucks and trailers up to 11,000 kg GVW. Working knowledge of trucking rules and regulations including CVOR.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively deal with staff, contractors and suppliers.
  • Ability to keep accurate records with good documentation skills and basic computer skills in Word and Excel. Previous training or work experience with Auto CAD, GPS surveying and GIS would be beneficial.
  • Ability to safely operate a range of medium sized equipment including tractors, mini-excavators and skid-steer loaders with accompanying attachments.
  • Ability to safely operate a range of tools including chain saws, power tools and hand tools.
  • Certifications as set out in the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations including but not limited to: First Aid and CPR, Traffic Control (Book 7), Backing Up, Load Securement, Trenching and Excavating, Fall Prevention and Confined Space.
  • Be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Frequently expected to lift, carry, push or pull objects weighing more than 20 lbs
The pay range for this position is Job Level 5 $25.57 to $31.95 and hours of work are 1975 per year.
