Temporary, full-time opportunity (up to 24 months) with Hamilton Water in Hamilton, ON
Are you a results-oriented Civil Engineering Technologist or similarly qualified professional with supervisory experience in the water and wastewater industry? Reporting to the Manager of Water Distribution & Wastewater Collection, you’ll be accountable and responsible for the delivery of services associated with preventive maintenance, and construction, as well as with water distribution system customer service and water quality programs. With a focus on achieving goals and objectives, you’ll not only provide leadership, technical advice and knowledge, direction and mentoring to staff within the Section, but also promote teamwork and integration between internal and external parties participating in cross-functional and cross-program initiatives.
As Water Distribution Superintendent in the Yards, you’ll also monitor ongoing operations to ensure they meet the growing needs of Hamilton residents and businesses, prepare, and report on, the Section’s services, financial, administrative and staff performance against established benchmarks, and implement strategies to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness. It will be your job to ensure that the Water Distribution & Wastewater Collection Section undertakes all activities and provides all services in accordance with City and Provincial guidelines, with minimal disruption to the public, and in the most effective and efficient manner consistent with the City of Hamilton Mission, Vision and Values.
An excellent communicator with a high level of personal integrity and a proven record of leadership and guidance, technical competence, customer focus, innovation/creativity, team advocacy, and staff delegation, empowerment and development, you’re well prepared to excel in this key leadership role.
Your qualifications as Superintendent of Water Distribution – Yards include:
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge of the duties listed above normally acquired through a community college diploma as an Engineering Technologist (Civil preferred) or an approved equivalent and/or a combination of education and progressive work-related experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of City of Hamilton Bylaws; City of Hamilton and Provincial Health and Safety policies, Acts and regulations; Ministry of Transportation regulations; Maintenance Management Standards; Provincial Fire Codes; Building Codes and Plumbing Codes; and the Safe Drinking Water Act and its regulations as they relate to the operation of water distribution systems.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency utilizing Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), and spatial applications such as GIMS/SPIDER.
  • Proficiency utilizing computer maintenance management systems (HANSEN preferred).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, standards and specifications, and plan and profile “as-built” drawings.
  • Progressive satisfactory supervisory experience in the water and wastewater industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a multi-disciplinary staff in a results-oriented environment and a predominantly unionized setting.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MOECC) Class I Operator Certificate (by exam) in Water Distribution or Water Distribution & Supply, or the willingness to achieve same.
  • Excellent leadership, facilitation, communication, presentation, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of the collective bargaining process.
  • A valid Class “G” driver’s licence.
  • As a condition of employment, the successful applicant will be required to obtain a satisfactory Criminal Record & Judicial Matters Check, at their own expense, prior to beginning work in this position.
This temporary, full-time position offers a wage range of $54.790 to $64.082 per hour (based on a 35-hour work week schedule).
