Planner – Policy Planning
Permanent Full-Time
35 hours per week
Under the direction of the Manager, Policy Planning, this position will primarily perform the tasks associated with the preparation and evaluation of comprehensive studies and research projects to support the strategic evaluation of emerging trends and new requirements undertaken by the Town, County, Province and other municipalities. The general responsibilities include the tasks inherent in the analysis and application of Provincial, County and Town policy and provisions, supporting discussion to liaise and negotiate with stakeholders, and preparing staff recommendations, reports and communication material.
In addition to the day-to-day policy branch services, this position also supports the development branch with the review and evaluation of development applications under the Planning Act.
  • Requires a university degree in Planning or a related field from a recognized university or equivalent.
  • Must be eligible for candidate member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP)
  • Requires 1-3 years of industry experience in the municipal and/or private sector preferred.
  • Class “G” Driver’s License in good standing is required
  • Occasional availability to attend evening meetings and/or other events, as required.
  • Working knowledge of applicable Provincial legislation including the Ontario Planning Act, Condominium Act, the Ontario Heritage Act, and the Ontario Municipal Act.
  • Experience in the implementation of progressive planning principles, concepts and practices, as well as an understanding of long-range community planning objectives
  • Undertake comprehensive studies and research projects to support the strategic evaluation of emerging trends and new planning requirements, including those from the Province and the County, and to ensure compliance of the Town’s implementing planning documents including the Official Plan and Zoning By-law. Prepare policy documents including Official Plans and Official Plan amendments, Zoning By-laws and Zoning By-law amendments, growth management related studies and reports on demographics, Town planning statistics, land budget, etc.
  • Review, evaluate and analyze County and Provincial and other municipally initiated policy initiatives. Support negotiations with and coordinates the input of consultants, other Town departments, boards and commissions, provincial and federal agencies and the general public on the details of policy initiatives, planning and development proposals and amendments

Salary: $55,226.08 - $68,941.60 based on experience and education.
